Happy Goats Make Healthy Milk

Author: Lazy Dairy Maid

The Happy Goats enjoy their lazy days munching fresh grass and local hay in the N. Cascade Mountains, drinking fresh Glacier sourced water & relaxing at night.

The dairy breeds utilized include Nubian, French Alpine, Oberhasli, and Lamancha.

The goats are only milked for a few months out of the year, so the supply of fresh milk is limited.  They are only in "Milk" for Spring and Summer, then "Dry" for the breeding season during the Fall and Winter. They  "Kid" in Feb/March to April.  The "Kids" have all the milk for about a month. Then the Moms are seperated for milking and reunited later. The milk is used for both cheese and soap. French Alpines were bred for increased cheese yield. Nubians and  Lamanchas have a high percentage of cream, the resulting milk gives delicious Chevre cheese and luxurious Soaps. The Oberhasli and French Alpines add mountain hardiness for extreme winters.  When the weather starts to change and the Buck begins to smell,  it's time to dry them up. It's also about the time the remaining kids and lambs go off to freezer camp.... So, the mom's get to enjoy their rest while they make new babies.
